11/26/2023 0 Comments Silverfast vs vuescan sharpness![]() Silverfast is a powerful package which I use and I’ve not encountered anything lacking in terms of features. Two notable scanner software packages are Silverfast and Vuescan. Software will be supplied with your scanner which will do the job although they may be a bit too basic and lacking features. I’ve seen these on the market at about £230. With 6400 x 9600 dpi resolution, this high performance scanner ensures precision film scanning for sharp, vivid reproductions up to 17″ x 22.” Featuring DIGITAL ICE for both film and prints, one-touch colour restoration and Adobe Photoshop Elements, this scanner provides a complete photo restoration solution. These come in at about £600.Ī cheaper option is the Epson Perfection V600 Photo delivers outstanding quality scans from photos, film, slides and everyday documents. The Dual Lens System optimises each scan, automatically selecting from two lenses for the desired scan resolution. An enhanced optical system (High-Pass Optics) consisting of anti-reflective lens coatings and a high-reflection mirror provides the highest level of image quality which in turn helps you scan faster. Very good results for precision colour and detail. ScannersĮpson make some very good scanners and I personally opted for an Epson V750 PRO with Silverfast included.Įpson V750 PRO is excellent for scanning negatives, slides or prints and is the first flatbed scanner with 6400 dpi resolution and unique fluid mount capabilities for photo studio applications. Getting a good scan is critical, since this is the raw material you’ll be working with and a poor scan will be harder to get good results from.īuy the best scanner you can afford and a flatbed would be the best choice with a transparency hood for scanning slides and negatives. Whenever i repair a scanner i will share the results with you and i hope it helps you to save some money. If you’ve got a shoe box full of old photos or a bag full of negatives then you will need to digitise them before any restoration work or archiving can be done. This comparison page will grow over time. In case you want to digitize slide film it may be worth looking at scanners with higher optical resolutions and better dynamic range, like the later Minolta Elite 5400 or Nikon LS 5 / 5000 scanners. Both are rated at 3200 dpi, what is plenty enough resolution for archiving negative film. Until now, the Minolta Dimage Dual Scan III and IV gave me the sharpest results. In Photoshop cropped and resized to the same size.Only standard sharpening and no white balance. All scans were oriented in the tranport direction (horizontally).Scan in Vuescan as raw dng at the highest optical resolution claimed by the manufacturer.I find this to be pretty important, because most of the reviews on the web relate to the original film holders.Īll of the scans were made in the same environment: On flatbed scanners i used a glass sandwich instead of the original film holders for optimal flatness and i adjusted the height of the negative until i got the best possible sharpness. When there is something special to say about a particular scanner i will add a note below.Īll of them were fully serviced (cleaned, lubed and adjusted) before i scanned the test negative. Other than that, the images below are easy to read for everyone. So i continued documenting the results with this cheap test negative and found direct a/b comparisons still pretty useful. Of course, a USAF target would offer a clear statement about the quantified true resolution of the device tested, but when i started making these test scans i had no USAF target at hand and some of the devices are already sold. All of the scanners i tested did not show any problems with noise or limited dynamic range for negative conversion. My interest is mainly about simple optical resolution that is limited by the lens or the transport used in the scanner. This is not intended to be a scientific review, instead it should be a source of information about scanners that are either underrated or worth looking at because they can be had for cheap. This is a simple side by side comparison of results from different film and flatbed scanners i owned.
